| Prehistory - The old history of Bahamas |
The old history known for Bahamas dates back to ninth century AD, when original inhabitants Arawak Lucayan tribe lived in Bahamas. The roots of Arawak tribe ware from South America, they made there way through Caribbean and arrived in Bahamas. The Arawak tribe ware simple people, their live hood was dependent upon two factors, agriculture and fishing. There luck ran out when in 1942 Christopher Columbus set his foot on shores of Bahamas. According to historian at that time, the population of Arawak tribe was between 35,000 to 45,000. Soon they ware slaved and used for agriculture, mining and labors needed to support trade. According to rough estimates their population was wiped or reduced to few numbers in three decades.

| Golden Age of Pirates in Bahamas |
Once settlers built houses and established farms field around Eleutheran and other islands, more and more trade boomed in new found land. With more settlers looking for golden opportunities in trade an some looking for religious freedom, the settlement quickly grew to sizable community. This gave rise to first British colony in Eleuthera island. Because of its prosperity and richness in agriculture and trade attracted pirates attention. Soon it became attraction point for many well known pirates such as Blackbeard Pirate, Anne Bonney Pirate and Henry Morgan Pirate. The pirates controlled the seas around the islands, the merchant ships had to take refuge under British and Spanish ships. Even then merchant ships ware helpless often surrendering to pirates for everything in exchange of lives. The next few decades ware known as "The Golden Age Of Piracy".

| Rise Of Smugling In Bahamas |
Bahamas often benefitted with crisis in neighboring America, be it war with Great Britain for independence or America's Revolutionary War. During war with England many southern brought there slave to islands, and they ware used in agriculture for growing cotton and other agriculture products. Also in 1861, during American civil war gave boost to Bahamas, the local people shipped confederate cotton to English mills and in turn got money from Confederate rebels. The Bahamas also got benefited with ban on liquor in America during 1919. This created smuggling of liquor in America through Bahamas.

Finally, Great Britain granted the islands option of self-government in year 1964. This changed the status of island from colony to Commonwealth state. After four years, Bahamas became independent country but retained Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. Today Bahamas has its own prime minister and independent government.
